Track Listing:
Down By The Riverside (Traditional)
Justin: Lead Vocal, Banjo | Briana: Vocal | Matt: Vocal, Mandolin, Fiddle | Sam: Bass | Jason: Percussion | Beau Moore: Guitar, Bass Vocal
One of the oldest extant African-American spirituals, written and sung by enslaved people before the Civil War, and still one of our most beloved folk songs, a tribute to the immense contribution of Black Americans to the development of folk and popular music.
Till There Was You (Merideth Wilson)
Briana: Lead Vocal | Matt: Guitar, Tenor Guitar | Sam: Bass | Jason: Percussion
This beloved classic from the 1957 Broadway musical “The Music Man” has rightly made its way into the Great American Songbook.
John Henry (Traditional)
Justin: Lead Vocal, Banjo | Briana: Vocal | Matt: Vocal, Mandolin, Fiddle | Sam: Bass | Jason: Percussion | Beau Moore: Guitar
Black history is a foundational part of American folk music and folk art, a fact that is too often forgotten. The story of the Black folk hero John Henry has become one of America's classic tall tales. On the one hand he represents the triumph of working people. But his story is also one of exploitation, and the very real physical impacts of having to continually struggle against oppression and discrimination.
Morning (Justin Flagg, Matt Gelfer)
Justin: Vocal, Banjo | Briana: Vocal | Matt: Vocal, Mandolin, Fiddle, Guitar | Sam: Bass | Jason: Percussion
The very first track from our very first album, Ship of Fools (2010) gets a quarantine makeover, ten years on.
Keep On The Sunny Side (Lyrics: Ada Blenkhorn, Music: J. Howard Entwisle)
Briana: Lead Vocal | Justin: Vocal, Banjo | Matt: Vocal, Mandolin, Fiddle | Sam: Bass | Jason: Percussion | Beau Moore: Guitar
In the midst of the struggles we face, it can be easy to burn out. Whether you're working to end injustice or working to put food on the table, it's important to take a breather once in a while. With the Carter Family’s signature song, we invite you to take a walk on the sunny side.
Ohio (Neil Young)
Briana: Vocal | Justin: Vocal | Matt: Vocal, Guitar, Fiddle | Sam: Electric Bass | Jason: Percussion
Our nation has a proud tradition of protest. But when those protests get within striking distance of the systems of oppression that elevate some over others, our nation also has a shameful tradition of responding with state violence. That’s what happened at Kent State in 1970, and we're seeing it again today as people across the country protest the killing of Black and brown Americans.
Fare Thee Well (Dink’s Song) (Anonymous)
Briana: Lead Vocal | Justin: Guitar, Banjo | Matt: Fiddle | Sam: Bass
An immensely popular song among folk revivalists, Dink’s Song was “discovered” in 1904 during a field recording expedition along the Brazos river in Texas. Dink was a Black woman from Mississippi who had traveled to Texas with her child and her partner, who was working to build a levee on the river. Hardly anything is known about her and her story, aside from this song.
Little Maggie/Catharsis (Traditional/Amy Cann)
Justin: Lead Vocal, Banjo | Briana: Vocal | Matt: Vocal, Fiddle | Sam: Bass | Jason: Percussion | Beau Moore: Guitar | Jesse Friedberg: Dobro
One of the many old-time Appalachian songs that Dr. Ralph Stanley made his own. Our version mixes the old with the new, weaving in a 20th century fiddle tune composed by New England fiddler Amy Cann.
Where The Soul of Man Never Dies (William Matthew Golden)
Justin: Vocal | Briana: Vocal | Matt: Mandolin | Sam: Bass | Beau Moore: Guitar
A lovely and moving spiritual we first heard from Tony Rice and Ricky Skaggs.
Sunday (Justin Flagg)
Justin: Lead Vocal, Guitar | Briana: Vocal | Matt: Vocal, Mandolin, Fiddle, Viola | Sam: Cello, Bass | Jason: Percussion
This is one from the vaults, written in prehistoric times and not seen since 2006. We blew the dust off to present it to you.
Union Maid (Woody Guthrie)
Briana: Lead Vocal | Justin: Vocal, Banjo | Matt: Vocal, Fiddle, Mandolin, Guitar | Sam: Bass | Jason: Percussion
In celebration of the international labor movement, this song from Woody Guthrie recounts the bravery and resilience of the many women who contributed so much to the power of unions in America.
In The Pines (Traditional)
Matt: Lead Vocal, Guitar, Fiddle | Justin: Vocal | Briana: Vocal | Sam: Bass | Jason: Percussion
One of the most influential folk musicians of the 20th Century, Huddie Ledbetter (better known as Lead Belly) died a pauper in 1949, leaving behind a diverse songbook that would shape American music for generations to come. His rendition of the Appalachian folk song "In The Pines" has been performed by blues singers, grunge bands, and just about everyone in between.
All You Fascists Bound To Lose (Woody Guthrie)
Justin: Lead Vocal, Banjo | Briana: Vocal | Matt: Vocal, Mandolin, Fiddle | Sam: Bass | Jason: Percussion | Beau Moore: Guitar
A lesser-known Woody Guthrie song, written at a time when most Americans could agree that fascism was bad and being anti-fascist was good. Our version includes some additional lyrics that we picked up from The Tillers.
Worried Man Blues (Traditional)
Justin: Lead Vocal, Banjo | Briana: Vocal | Matt: Vocal, Mandolin, Fiddle | Beau Moore: Guitar | Jesse Friedberg: Dobro
The origins of this Quarantune are lost to history, but the first recording was made by the Carter Family in 1930, just in time for the Great Depression. In 1970, as his time on the blacklist was finally ending, Pete Seeger played this song on the Johnny Cash Show, saying, "these old songs are never going to die out. This song is the whole human race."
Africa (David Paich, Jeff Porcaro)
Matt: Lead Vocal, Guitar, Mandolins, Fiddles |Justin: Vocal, Banjo | Briana: Vocal | Sam: Bass | Jason: Percussion | Jesse Friedberg: Dobro
Toto’s immortal classic as it was truly meant to be - bluegrass style.
